Parasitic worms? Ew... just ew. I don't care if they look like delicious BBQ eel when you cook them up... gross. I wonder if thinking that that particular party is dead will be a running gag? I kind of suspect it will be. Laios continues to successfully hide his frantic concern over his consumed little sister, Farin Remember her? The whole reason the party is supposedly exploring the dungeon in the first place?

My love of mythical creatures when I called out the creature being a kelpie. And immediate call out of the stupidity of trying to ride a kelpie to cross a lake, because their literal whole thing is supposed to be tricking people into riding them before drowning and eating the prey.

I kind of love Marcille insisting on cleaning Senshi. And she wanted soap to hopefully clean his filthy beard.

Also, Laios singing along to the Mermaid/Siren, and it pissing them off and swimming away. I thought that maybe it was like some big brain move of countering their beguiling power, but looks like he just wanted to sing with it.

Again, the series is not afraid to shake up its established format if it deems fit. This time there's no hunting for exotic dishes because half of the episode is fleshing out Marcille and Falin's past while the other half reminds viewers the dungeon our party is going through isn't a pushover and can easily kill the unwary. Because of the format, the dish brought out this time round is a rehash of last week's hunt so it's much more forced.

Marcille is the archetypal template for academic theory, while Falin is her polar opposite and learnt her trade from practical experience. Because they have such differing backgrounds, it turns out they hit it off really well when Marcille swallows her pride and tries to discover how Falin had completely overturned her expectations. The raspberries are from her memories and technically frame the first half of the episode despite not being obtained the usual way as per the franchise. It's also possible to infer Falin has the same family trait of randomly eating strange foods on sight, although not to the psychotic degree Laios has.

The Undine is not a monster that's usually portrayed as an elemental ball of water with a temper as hot as the water boiled in Marcille's pot. On its home turf and with the element of surprise, no one in the party has a chance against it so they were forced to retreat with Marcille depleted. Not great for the party, as they'd lost time with Laios's act of idiocy with parasites and now Marcille is temporarily out of commission partly due to bad luck. They are running out of time and know it, but will their ex-party member come to their aid or will they be forced to bargain as Chilchuck fears?

The dungeon really is the most interesting thing about this show. That is not meant to be negative, it is just very fascinating to see how a dungeon is basically a world onto itself with many systems in place to keep the ecosystem in it functioning. The episode also made clear that just having a lot of magic is not nearly enough to set one up and you would need to do a lot of thinking and planning. It makes one wonder about the mage that set up such a huge dungeon.

I feel a little dumb that it took me until seeing her run around the dungeon and eating the berries to realise that she was the sister. Such that I forgot about the sister for a moment and thought the way she was acting she could be like a sister to him. They are apparently kind of similar.

It doesn't feel like that at first watch, but this is a return to template for the series. Two monster related dishes, and the party gets going with the help of an ex-party member. Namari might not assist with the others, but she's done enough for them that the next time they meet with no jobs they can socialise with each other without issue.

Tentacles = banana or yam with poisonous outer layer? Difficult to relate to, so that part is more to showcase what Namari brings to her party besides her traditional dwarf attributes. Interesting name too, just as Senshi means warrior in standard Japanese Namari translates to accent. Yet she speaks perfectly understandable standard Japanese.

For the bugbear which gave the party so much trouble previously, it turns out Senshi's tools really are of the highest grade. A pot so durable it resists Undine water shots which easily pierce flesh, it takes the combination of two sturdy dwarves to bring it to heel. Using it as a base, more Kelpie meat (I think our party used that ingredient for at least two dishes or more by this episode) and standard vegetables the stew (meat and potatoes by another name) is completed. It's so good even the other party are willing to give it a try, which indirectly proves Senshi's cooking isn't consumed by the party out of sheer necessity or to save face.

Farin having a suitor is another surprise, as is his abandonment. The latter not that surprising in hindsight after seeing Laios's poor command in episode one. Still, it means the samurai will get his turn in the spotlight eventually so it's something to look forward to.

MVP of the week goes to the adamant cooking pot. Namari can be shocked at adamant being used for a pan, but given that it can be used in many different ways including cooking it seems like a pretty solid idea. Heck, maybe it will be used to bash that red dragon eventually.

Given the pacing of the series to date, one would wonder if the party would get to the red dragon given how slowly they were traversing the floors. Fortunately, the series is activating one of the catalysts it planted many weeks ago during the orc raid episode. The orcs were telling the truth: the red dragon is active and in a much higher level than the ones Laios and company made it to the first time round. All of a sudden, the gourmand party faces up to its main quest objective, and it looks like cooking is off the menu until they rescue Falin.

Getting to the city is another exposition in lateral thinking. It's clear the previous route didn't go down the tentacle-infested route recommended by the orcs, so they needed help. The "help" didn't come willingly and had to be slain to give them the tools they needed, but they got through in the end. Senshi treating tentacles as some kind of yam or root-based fiber for cooking seems forced, but it's the only way it could incorporate that segment into the cooking theme the franchise is selling itself on.

For the main city, Senshi proves he can cook without resorting to monster ingredients if that's what is available. He also resolves the biggest failing of the first dungeon raid: hunger directly leading to party wipeout. Although the party is much smaller and less combat capable than the previous group, they have the environment on their side and the element of surprise. Those will be decisive in determining whether or not they get to Falin before she's fully digested.

The frog bit was hilarious, those outfits really were something else. I am liking that the series is getting more and more layers. On the lowest level we have saving Falin and getting to know more about our group of adventurers. We are also slowly getting tidbits about the dungeon itself in how it functions plus how it was made. To complete it is the situation with the elves and what seems to be a race to getting to the dungeon master.

Marcille's facial expressions continue to be classic. Every time she is asked to eat/do/wear something weird is just a treat.

Watching the English dub, and just finished episode 9, I want to express my approval of Namari's voice. I am biased in enjoying androgynous performances, and I think it works really well with her tough dwarf woman character. It felt like the kind of thing you would probably get people complaining about, but I think worked really well and we should have more of.

Looking up the actor, it Marin Miller, who go figures is non-binary, which is cool. And also happen to be married to LittleKuriboh. Not really necessary to the performance, but to me I think is a bit neat.

Yeah, Marcille's face with the frog suits was hilarious.

At long last, the object of the gourmand team is finally within reach. And like many plans laid by Laios, this one really goes badly wrong more or less from the start. Fortunately for the party, they have always been good at improvisation and really took Senshi's determination about putting it all on the line to survive (and eat) to heart. As this is the long-awaited showdown, there is no cooking this week (they'll have plenty of opportunities next week assuming they get over the tragic outcome).

It would have been a truly pyrrhic victory for our gourmand four if they had killed the dragon but remained at death's door. Turns out the healing magic in this franchise is so effective it can even mend dismembered limbs (and this is Marcille who emphasises speed rather than effectiveness). Tragically, they took too long to force the showdown and Falin's remains may well be beyond even the most powerful of revival magics. However, they have done well to make it this far with just the four of them and having at least something to bury and commemorate may be the best possible outcome. That would really be too sad though, so they'll have to work hard to sort her remains from the rest of the dragon's waste so that something can be done with resurrection magic (however low the chance of success might be).

Could the plan have been improved? For starters, Senshi and Laios not wearing gloves to protect themselves from the heat of the frying pan after surviving dragon fire was a mistake. Having the frying pan for even a bit longer would have increased their options knowing there was a way to survive being breathed upon. Taking out the mithril cleaver so late on turned out to be decisive thanks to Chilchuck's deadeye aim, but if they had incorporated it into their plan sooner it might have saved Laios having to lose half his leg. The building collapse worked, but maybe a bit more rubble and an immediate follow-up might have saved the situation. Like Chilchuck said, it took everything they had and the only thing that mattered was surviving to the end and killing the dragon by piercing its weak spot as intended.

Interesting flashback featuring Laios and Falin. Turns out the latter had a talent for dealing with spirits since young, and took up training as a mage to capitalise on that talent. Brother Laios on the other hand wasn't much in his youth, but he still worked hard enough to acquire enough skills to slay a dragon with help from others.

The happy ending would be resurrecting Falin from what remains they can salvage and then cooking the red dragon innards (of which they've carved a literal tunnel out of to find Falin). Is there enough airtime in the last episode to accomplish that?

Hmm, it does not feel like a series with a sad end to me, so I would assume that something will happen that will bring upon hope. I also wonder what will happen beyond saving or not being able to save Falin, we stil have the second half to go after all.

You can't get it much clearer than that.
