Interesting. I would have figured French "cicatrice" (which gives us English "cicatrice," although some dictionaries prefer singular "cicatrix" to match the Latin root; Italian "cicatrice" isn't pronounced the same). Did they call out Spanish in an announcement or something?

On the Tomb Raider thing, it's always the go-to for ridiculous publisher expectations, but I think it's more a poster child for bloated spending with no realistic possibility of return. By all accounts, features like Tress FX came as corporate mandates and weren't cheap, and I sincerely doubt they translated to any increase in sales. On the bright side, at least that one didn't actually kill its series.

It also helps to remember sales numbers don't mean much if half those sales were from when the game was 2 dollars on a Steam sale. Revenue and profit are more important than how many units something sold these days, even if the later is still used as a bragging point by companies. I myself have the game from a "Tomb Raider Collection" I got on Steam awhile back for dirt cheap, although I've never actually played it. I just wanted the original remake trilogy of Anniversary, Legend, and Underworld from the mid 2000s myself. Maybe 1 or 2 dollars of that purchase went towards the profit for that game in the end out of the 59.99 they originally wanted for it.

The shutting down of video game journalism is just the natural course. They have long fallen behind in the era of YouTube and Twitch and they have repeatedly complained many times over the years how channels like MrMackDaddy37 on YouTube has 2 million subscribers and gets prioritized for review codes and press event invites than they do. And the particular ones being shut down recently are hard to sympathize with given their output and controversies that have marred them over the years. That atrociously racist anti-Japanese article Vice put out evaporated any sympathy people may have had for them in particular. I'm glad to see more people speaking up in the face of anti-Japanese rhetoric in recent times that has plagued the western gaming industry and karma coming back to show them hate is not welcome in this industry.

Apparently Uncle Matin from the new Double Dragon game is named for the garage the Lees pop out of in the original arcade game. Maybe he’s the one that owns it and lets the Lee brothers work there. People have also pointed out he has kind of a resemblance to the character of Blaster from the notoriously so awful it’s kind of funny Double Dragon cartoon.

We’ll see if the final game is worth the look, although with different studios I get why Marian no longer resembles Noi from Dorohedoro.

Considering how sexism & racism are still prevalent in the industry and the fandom?

Oh, yeah. I remember that game got some crazy Steam sales within like six months of launch. I paid I think $15 for my copy, and I remember being shocked to see it that cheap when it was so recent and such a big title.

Eh, Motherboard shuttering is a mixed bag for me. Another site is shut down for capitalist reasons, but I also don't have a lot of sympathy for guys like Klepek who went to bat for some very suspect people even recently. Vice as a whole has been a mixed bag of a media outlet, exposing injustices on one hand, but also engaging in some pretty slimy coverage, which included throwing some sources under the bus. There was good work done overall, but a lot of iffy stuff too. It's one of those things where I have to take good with bad.

As for happier stuff, good to see another Double Dragon entry. I'm actually surprised they didn't do something like make Billy and Jimmy playable in River City Girls 2. I do feel like a full on crossover with Kunio-Kun needs to happen at some point.

Now just counting down to Tears of the Kingdom.

I'm surprised we aren't talking about the Hololive fighting game.

It's a pretty high-effort production for something that is free. The references are really great and you can tell right away it's made by people that love the group.

I'm also surprised at how... not casual friendly it is. Like, the execution isn't super hard, but you're likely going to watch a one-player game if someone who vaguely knows how to play fighting games gets matched with someone that just wants to push buttons and see the Botan update with her new voice lines that she just did on stream a day ago or whatever.

There's like no/minimal throw protection or something, so once you have someone in any kind of pressure, it's really easy to mix in throws into your strings and make someone's life miserable once you win neutral. It's funny seeing this type of game design when most devs have moved towards making things "easier" for casual players.

(there's a great video by Kizzie Kay that explains how making things "easier" actually just makes things easier for people with legacy skills to some extent)

I mean, beyond the idea that there's already day one 100% combos with the Ame assist or something, which I might try learning later today to see if I can hit someone with it online.

(though I'm bad at building the assist meter probably because I'm using the easy inputs or something... actually, I have no real idea how meter works in this game even after playing the tutorial and my friend explaining it to me and how it's dumb/confusing that the super meter actually uses an assist function at one point)

Something fun to do while waiting for Street Fighter 6.
