The show does sound really interesting, even more so with a good dub behind it, but like the last paragraph of the review said, that price is just too much, especially when the CD is iffy on its track selection and the disks have technical issues. Between the price and this being one of PonyCan's debut releases, those things shouldn't happen.

That really is too bad about the technical issues. They REALLY need to step up their game if they want to be the "premium, collector's choice" for physical releases. I know many people were already on the fence (at best) about buying this release and disk issues won't help that, which is too bad because it really is a good series. I hope it at least gets good streaming numbers.

I will emphasize that the glitch I mentioned on the Blu-Ray disk could be just a problem with my particular copy rather than a general one. (I have seen the former happen before.) I am very interested to hear if anyone else who actually got this experienced the same flaw.

The subtitle issue on the DVD, though, is almost certainly not specific to my copy. I'd forgive if it happened only once, but numerous times is a pretty big stumble.

The review copy of the Blu-Ray disk consistently glitched badly at the 9:38-9:50 mark of episode 4, while the DVD version had problems with its English subtitles; the font is crude and ugly, but much more importantly, the subtitles have gaps where dialog is not translated. This happened several times in episode 1 alone, to the point that watching the DVD in Japanese is not recommended unless you know enough Japanese to get by without the subtitles.

You do not have things like these in a high premium release of flagship-class, especially for the grand opening. And I agree, that cd sure sounds like unnecessary filling...

The Japanese bluray volumes were 7500 yen apiece on cdjapan(~$63), but with 2 episodes instead of 4, so I guess this is still a little cheaper than the Japanese one despite everything. On the other hand, we do not get the visual novel included in the original...

The review has been updated to reflect the fact that the "glitch" Theron experienced may be particular to his screener disc (like a scratch during shipping or something) and not a flaw everyone is experiencing with this release.

If anyone else has purchased the disc and can let us know if they experience the same thing, it'd be appreciated.

Just tested my copy of the blu ray disc in the area of episode 4 that was shown in the review with my computer drive and had no issues aside from having to update my copy of Arcsoft total media theater 6. Without the update it would hang before opening the disk at all.

Granted this wasnt a full view of the entire disk's contents but i think it goes to show that its likely the issue with the screener was either an early unrevised version with an error in it or damaged. As i have not seen the show yet and am waiting to watch it untill i get all the copies of the disk I didn't check on the DVD subtitles. If there were specific areas listed to check i would have done so but there wasnt.

I would try it in other devices but I actually don't own any other players besides in my computer. I have all my media running through my PC.

For reference the software version of arcsoft was 6.7.1.119 and the disk drive was a LG WH10LS30.

Also made this account just to post this for you all.

I really liked this show a lot. Sadly, Ponycan has priced its super-duper editions beyond what I can justify paying, but I hope they release a cheaper, full season set later on.

It had one of the most heart-breaking moments I've ever witnessed in anime. I tear up just thinking about it. I won't describe it, not even in spoiler tags, because I won't do it justice, I'm sure. It's possible you could watch the exact same moment and wonder why it moved me so much. But it hit my heart like a hammer blow.

As much as I don't like the direction being taken by PonyCan I also don't want them to get hit with production issues like Theron may have seen. They've already pushed way beyond the boundary with their distribution model, that would be bad.

I really like yuki yuna a lot let me say that first!

That said it is absolutely nothing new it is madoka magica with a slight different magic system and the side characters (the sisters) replacing mami and sayaka. It is madoka light because you remove/tone down the truly harrowing aspects of madoka and you get yuki yuna.

I was not going to say this until I saw the final episodes but spoiler[Mimori Togo IS HOMURA almost everything about her is Homura with her legs being taken away because she has done this before. The entire ending two episode almost are just straight madoka with some slight changes with the secret of the world and the magical beings just using them]
If yuki yuna had debuted before madoka it would be the one talked about and the critical darling but it's second so it gets some mild interest because madoka did it before.

That said I do think that yuki yuna does quite a few things better then madoka. It tones down a lot of the somewhat obnoxious elements of madoka to reasonable levels. The sisters are better charcters then sayaka and mami I think and the show doesn't seem to delight in their pain like madoka can sometimes I think. I also think the magic system is better and more well done.

That said yay pony can is done for I think

I don't know about the DVD, but the BD doesn't have any issues.

Really liked the first 4 eps, held off on watching until I got this set and i'm not disappointed by the show nor the product. The booklet was surprisingly packed, with two VA interviews and two staff member interviews as well as artwork and character profiles i'm happy. The keyframes included were also really nice, it was quite neat of them to use that kind of packaging for them too.

The only thing i'm worried about is the video quality, as the discs were not produced in Japan, like AoAs are. I'm really hoping someone puts up some comparisons ASAP!

Not to mention how quick we're getting both Yuki Yuna and DenkiGai Shocked! Really hoping that PonyCan will continue with the speedy releases for their upcoming shows.

An included CD is set up a bit strangely, as most of its dozen tracks are simply (seemingly-exact) repeats of the opener and closer themes, with a couple of karaoke songs from episode 4 thrown in for good measure.

The CD actually contains different versions of the songs & they're sung by different characters Wink.

E: One thing I absolutely can't agree with after watching episode 1 in both language tracks is giving both the sub and dub the same score. Though I guess it's just common practise in ANN reviews to give both the JP and US tracks the same score.

No technical issues on my BD. As for the DVD...

The first episode starts with the subtitles for the first spoken line coming in before the speaking starts and goes away before the line ends. Things are timed correctly from there. Other than that so far, I don't see any missing subtitles in episode 1. Any specific areas in other episodes I can look at?

This is on my PS3, if it matters.

lol This may be the first and last time I take that DVD out. The holder feels and sounds a little brittle...

I found this anime's story extremely lackluster in the end, and predictable overall. It's only real unique aspect as the handicapped thing. That wasn't enough to make up for the rest of the show. I'd rate the sub better than the dub from the few episodes I heard at a friends place, dub being around a B-.

Are you cetain about that? Because I listened to all of the versions of the opener and couldn't make out a significant difference in the vocals.

Oh, it's definitely not a universal practice, as several ANN reviewers over time have routinely scored dubs lower. I can't speak for how the others approach this, but I default to equal sub/dub scores unless there's a clear difference in quality. In this case two somewhat awkwardly-paced lines in four episodes isn't enough for me to justify even a one step mark-down, especially when the voices match so well. Perhaps you can elaborate on where you think the dub was worse?

Timing being off on the very first line is something that I had missed, but it's definitely there in my copy. As for entirely missing lines in the subtitles, here are a few examples from the first episode, with what's missing based on the Crunchyroll stream:

:50 - Fu's line "Seriously, that wasn't even a kick" is missing.

4:44 - Fu's line "We have so many unresolved requests [concerning the kittens]" is missing.

5:28 - Yuna's line "You're going to the coast clean-up, right?" is missing.

5:57 - Itsuki's line "That website's gotten so good" stays on the screen while Fu is supposed to be saying "You finished it so fast," but the latter never appears.

7:30 - Itsuki's line "You still want to eat?" remains on the screen while Fu is supposed to be saying, "You eat so little, Itsuki" but the latter never appears.

There are more cases, too; I clearly remember one in the scene where Fu is first explaining things to the girls after they are transported to the barrier world, for instance, but this should give you a good idea. Some of these are hard to spot because other lines are happening at the same time, but they're still definite misses. Also - and I had forgotten this - every so often what looks like a space symbol sometimes precedes the subtitles.

Now, I haven't checked this on another DVD player to see if perhaps out-of-date software might be an issue, but I've never seen this kiind of problem being connected to that before.

Everything's there on my DVD...

EDIT: Also appears fine on all my other players.
