Dragon Quest VII 3DS port ships September 16

Nintendo announced during its live-streamed Nintendo Direct presentation on Thursday that the Nintendo 3DS port of Square Enix's Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King game will launch in North America in 2017. The game was originally slated for western release in 2016.

In addition, Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past will ship for Nintendo 3DS on September 16 in North America.

Nintendo also revealed that players who pre-purchase Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past on the 3DS eShop will receive a Dragon Quest VII 3DS home menu theme. Producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto will be at PAX West in Seattle from September 2-5 to give a developer discussion on the game.

Square Enix released Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, a remake of the original PlayStation title, in Japan in 2013. The game features new graphics, and the Western release will include a new translation.

Square Enix released Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King in Japan in August 2015. Square Enix first released Dragon Quest VIII: Sora to Umi to Daichi to Norowareshi Himegimi (Dragon Quest VIII: The Sky, the Ocean, the Earth, and the Cursed Princess) for the PlayStation 2 in Japan in 2004, and then in North America in 2005, with the title Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. Square Enix released the iOS/Android port of the game in Japan in December 2013, and released the port worldwide in May 2014.

The 3DS port of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King includes a new story scenario and two new party members: a female thief named Gelda, and Morrie from the Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road arcade game. The game also supports the Nintendo 3DS platform's StreetPass system. The port also adds an orchestral score performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.

The new story scenario centers around the past of the jester Dhoulmagus, and the childhood of the game's protagonist.
