No chance in hell for Suzume, Sky, and Transformers, but maybe Heron. Also, will the recent tragedies in Japan be a boost for Godzilla's awards prospects?

Just hope that Godzilla gets an Oscar as it deserves it.

What are the chances of Kaiju boom happening in the following years?

Speaking only for myself, watching the new Godzilla v Kong trailer left me underwhelmed. I'm sure it's probably a good film but the bar has been raised with G-1 simply because it has emotional depth as well as fast paced, entertaining action.

The Japanese film industry has a great advantage at the moment with the problems that Hollywood is facing due to the recovery of production from both the pandemic and the strikes as well as being wrapped up in identity politics by producing quality movies that people want to watch.

Whether they do so or drop the ball, so to speak, only time will tell.

Godzilla Minus One couldn't win a Best Picture, but it deserves to be nominated. It's the best-executed monster movie I've ever seen.

Hopefully it will get at least nominated in the special effects category.

Outside Japan? Probably none. Godzilla -1 was good, but it's a one-off imo.

Maybe if Kaiju #8 gets a good Japanese live-action adaptation... Though I don't know if that counts...

If it gets nominated, which it really should (even if Best Picture is Oppenheimer’s to lose) it’s Ran all over again. Japan famously refused to nominate that for Best Foreign Film due to politics concerning Akira Kurosawa, only for it to score a Best Director nomination and win Best Costume Design.

Oscars have always been worth nothing, but with this year's new rules they are an absolute joke. That said it certainly wouldn't hurt if The Boy and the Heron wins animation as it does have a chance given Miyazaki is the only animator they have some respect for. By the way, choosing Perfect Days as Japan's entry was a weird choice, but the movie is great and honestly deserves it.
