More hetero romance, mind you. From what I remember from an interview I read, the original idea was more yuri in nature. But anyways, on this topic concretely... I think the producer shoud've sticked to watching AV or something. Dear Lord, have you folks realized that this kind of crime is one of the most frequently observed when it comes to anime-related people being arrested? Honestly, lock him up. |

This is the only thing I'm saying on this topic (since it's only tangentally related), but those of us with 2D interests and not 3D interests are not worried about ending up like the creep in this article. If you're soliciting nudes from an actual minor, you have an entirely different problem than someone just looking up/buying art they like.
As others have said, this is obvious grounds for punishment. Japanese prison is no cakewalk, and there is a good statistical likelihood that even if the guy is released in a few years, he's unlikely to re-offend (I hope). But what bothers me most is how the heck this kind of thing has become so prevailant in general. I recently watched someone in the FBI talk about how instances of photos being solicited on the internet from minors (for fetish or blackmail purposes) has risen dramatically around the globe since early 2022, most likely due to adolescent access to smartphones and internet culture. The only attempts I've seen to tackle this problem have been piss poor approaches from legislators in multiple countries, who themselves don't understand how the internet works, trying to use censorship on the internet in ways more likely to hurt minority groups and sex workers than protect children. |

Just so people have their facts straight and don't further distract from the actual news (cause screw this dude), the producer in question for Suzume's story changes (because he thought the broader market wouldn't like a lesbian romance) was probably Genki Kawamura, who's Shinkai's most important producer nowadays along with being responsible for the "once every three years" movie schedule for Shinkai, Mamoru Hosoda, and now Naoko Yamada. (He's also responsible for Rie Matsumoto being figuratively locked away in Toho's basement for the better part of a decade.)
