Late 20th century "Dad Rock" is pretty much my music. This series is one of my favourite things. It's great that it's finally getting an official English release. Not everyone gets on with the 4 page vignette chapters, but it works for me.

It's nice there seems to be a recent uptick in popularity of gender non-conforming characters. I'm just curious about something. I think the whole "transmen are men / transwomen are women" campaign is having a positive effect of increasing trans-visibility. But honestly, when you have a title like "The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't a Guy at All" isn't that kind of a slap in the face to any transgender and trans-ally readers?

? This series has nothing to do with the transgender movement. It's just a cute yuri series.

As a bona-fide child of the 80s, I sympathise.

Women who are boyish/tomboys/tough girls/gnc (gender non-conforming) females are not trans. ♡

This is great, its really a sweet series. When I first came across it I wasn't sure the short format would be for me, but it certainly won me over. Glad to see it being picked up.

Uh, no. I think you may be going a little far. One character had a face mask and hoodie on and the other character mistook her for a hot guy. The relationship then grows from there. No slapping in the face of transgenders involved. The series is mostly shoujo-ai and hasn't gone full on yuri yet (as of the last time I read).

No, it's not anything more complicated than as it sounds: A misunderstanding leading to the girl realizing the guy she's interested in, is a girl she's interested in. Nothing in how Mitsuki dresses -- she wears unisex clothing and has a particular style that lends to a handsome boy type beat, on top of her work wear obscuring much of her features -- nor how Aya is interested in her uses trans struggles as a punchline.

Secondarily, I personally would not include allies alongside there. Starkly different lived experiences, those.

This has nothing to do with the transgender movement, this is just a cute yuri manga

Also, gender non-conforming characters have been popular in Japanese media since the 70's, this ain't a new phenomenon

While the title translation is otherwise quite direct, the Japanese uses ‘hito’ (person) for the first ‘guy’ and ‘otoko’ (man) for the second, so it reads a little differently.

The original author gave the English title (just look at the cover). And, in any case, a more literal "The person she was interested in wasn't a man at all" doesn't sound natural.

I really think it's a funny story based on the old idea of a "tomboyish" girl being a "prince" for her schoolmates.

There's an entire spectrum of masculine expression in lesbian culture alone, not even getting to the actual concept of the gender spectrum.
It's kind of strange to assume a title conveying a misconception would be seen as a targeted jab at transmen in particular, unless your only attachment to this kind of media is stoking reactionary flames on social media.
